PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compress storage data by using difference data encoding and run length encoding corresponding to the kinds of respective input data in a monitoring device for storing the time series data of the operation state signals of an equipment. SOLUTION: This monitoring device is provided with an input signal conversion means 10 for sampling, digitizing and binary-encoding input signals from a monitoring object equipment, numerical subtraction means 1121-112M for computing difference data by the numerical subtraction of respective successive value data outputted from the input signal conversion means 10,γencoding means 1131-113M for outputting aγcode corresponding to the difference data as a difference data code word, exclusive OR means 1151-115M for turning respective logical value data outputted from the input signal conversion means 10 to the difference data code words and outputting an exclusive OR, a bit string connection means 12 for connecting the respective difference data code words and outputting an intermediate code word, an intermediate code word buffer 13 for storing the intermediate code word and a run length encoding means 14 for eliminating zero data from the intermediate code word and generating a run length code word.
