A process for the production of compounds of the general formula <FORM:1001958/C3/1> and mixtures thereof comprises condensing an amino acid of the general formula <FORM:1001958/C3/2> or a cyclic lactam thereof with a polymeric fat acid of the general formula R(COOH)x, where R is the hydrocarbon group of a polymeric fat acid, R is a divalent hydrocarbon group containing up to about 20 carbon atoms, R11 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing up to about 8 carbon atoms, y is the average number of <FORM:1001958/C3/3> units per carboxylic group and is a number up to about 40 and x is an integer from 2 to 4. The polymeric fat acids are derived from naturally occurring or synthetic, saturated, ethylenically unsaturated or acetylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, many of which are specified. Specified amino acids are 6-aminocaproic, 7-aminoheptanoic, 8-amino-octanoic, 10-aminodecanoic, 11-aminoundecanoic, 9-aminostearic, 12-aminostearic, 14-aminobehenic, p-aminobenzoic, p-aminocyclohexanoic and norcamphane aminocarboxylic acid. The products of the invention may be condensed with diamines of the general formula H2N.R111.NH2, where R111 is an aliphatic or aromatic radical containing from 2 to about 20 carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene, propylene, trimethylene tetramethylene, pentamethylene, hexamethylene, decamethylene, dodecamethylene, octadecamethylene, phenylene, metaxylylene, paraxylylene and cyclohexane diamine, 1 : 2-diaminobutane, 1 : 3-diaminobutane, 1 : 4-cyclohexane bis-(methylamine) and bis-aminoalkyl ethers. The polymeric fat acids are derived from naturally occurring or synthetic, saturated, ethylenically unsaturated or acetylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, many such acids being specified. Specified amino acids are 6-aminocaproic, 7-aminoheptanoic, 8-aminooctanoic, 10-aminodecanoic, 11-aminoundecanoic, 9-aminostearic, 12-aminostearic, 14-aminobehenic, p-aminobenzoic, p-aminocyclohexanoic and nonamphane aminocarboxylic acid.
