The seat 7 of a hinged valve 3 is cleaned by a fluid, e.g. gas or water, issued from a slit 8 in the seat, and the arrangement provides for a greater quantity of fluid to be issued as the valve 3 approaches the seat. The cleaning fluid is stored in a container 12 and passed to an inlet 5 via piston valves 17 and 18. When the valve 3 opens, the gas flows through the relatively small valve 17, and a larger valve 18 is closed. As the valve 3 approaches the seat, valve 18 opens to boost the quantity of cleaning gas. The valve 3 may be of a type which moves axially with respect to the seat. A single variable piston valve may control the gas quantity.</p> |
