Cellular core/integral skin nylon panels

Nylon has an m.wt. >10,000 and a softening point of 150 - 300 degrees C. The polymer contains monomer units of formula -NH.R.NH.CO.R'.CO- and/or -CO.R".NH- (where R and R' are opt. branched 4-13C alkylene, m- or p-phenylene or 1,4 cyclohexene, or R' forms a direct bond, and R" is 3 - 5C n-alkylene or 1,4-cyclohexene. The article comprises a cellular nylon core and an integral nylon skin. The foam has an average pore diameter of 1.5 mm. and is essentially free from pores with diameter >3 mm. The thickness of the skin is 0.2 to 3 mm. total thickness of the panel is 2.5 to 25 mm. Average density is 0.2 to 0.9 g/cm3. Ratio of impact strength (S) is joules: weight per area unit (W) in g/cm2 satisfies the condition 1og1o s/W >2. The panels combine low weight with excellent mechanical strength. They may be used as load-bearing structures in buildings and for furniture, containers such as cases or tanks and also as car body components.
