PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily and efficiently separate symbiotic microorganisms of an insect, having an ability for degrading a recalcitrant material such as a lignin, a cellulose, an aromatic compound and a dioxin which causes environmental pollution from excrement of the insect. SOLUTION: This method for separating the symbiotic microorganisms of the insect, having the ability for degrading the recalcitrant material, is characterized in that the symbiotic microorganisms are separated by culturing the excrement of the insect in a medium containing a lignin-based material and/or an aromatic compound as a carbon source, subjecting the microorganisms priorly propagating in the culture to enrichment culture, and collecting the microorganisms from the enrichment culture medium.
