A personal computer has a main board upon which a processor (14) is arranged. The main board holds a ROM memory (16) for a BIOS program and a RAM memory (18) into which the BIOS program is copied and from which the BIOS program is run when the personal computer is started. At least one floppy disk drive (24) is associated with a drive controller (22) and is releasably connected mechanically and electrically to the other parts of the personal computer. In order to ascertain how many drives (24, 26) are available, every time the computer is started it verifies how many drives (24, 26) are electrically connected and a bit is set in the RAM memory (18) for every connected drive (24, 26).
