In a rotary printing machine sheets are printed in two colours each colour being applied during one revolution of associated impression and forme cylinders 6, 9. Each sheet is fed from a device 3 on to grippers 5 and is thus held against an impression segment 7 whilst passing in contact with a forme 8 inked by rollers 18 to 21. The sheet bearing one colour impression is borne by the cylinder 6 past a delivery drum 11 to a drum 13 the grippers 12 of which operate such that the sheet is passed once around the drum 13 prior to re-engagement with the impression cylinder, this time in contact with a segment 15. The second colour is subsequently applied as the sheet is passed over a forme 16 inked by rollers 22 to 25. The printed sheet is then stripped from the cylinder 6 by grippers 10 on the drum 11 and is transferred to delivery mechanism 17. The inking roller groups 18-21 and 22-25 are controlled by mechanism such that each group automatically rises from the forme cylinder 9 during the passage of the unassociated forme therebeneath. The mechanism also causes the rollers to be raised one by one from the cylinder as they pass over the gaps between the formes. The machine may be used for single colour printing, the inking control mechanism in this case being arranged to allow the rollers to remain constantly in the inking position. |
