The invention comprises (1) silanes of the formula [(HO)cR]bSiR1a , and (2) siloxanes containing units of the formula <FORM:0998549/C3/1> with or without other units of the formula <FORM:0998549/C3/2> wherein each R is a tri- or tetra-valent hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon ether radical and is bonded to the silicon atom via a silicon carbon bond, R1 is monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, and each R11 is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, a and n are 0-3, b is 1 or 2, c is 2 or 3, and all the hydroxyl groups are primary. Typical [(HO)cR] groups are (HOCH2)2CHCH2CH2-, <FORM:0998549/C3/3> <FORM:0998549/C3/4> Specified R1 and R11 groups are alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl and cycloalkyl, and R11 may in addition be halogenated derivatives of these; many examples are given. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a hydroxy olefinic compound with a silane or siloxane containing silicon-hydrogen bonds in the presence of a platinum catalyst. Many examples are given; in typical Examples (9C) the silane (CH3)2SiH2 is reacted with (HOCH2CH2)3CH=CH2 to give <FORM:0998549/C3/5> and in (11A) a siloxane comprising the units (CF3CH2CH2)2SiO <FORM:0998549/C3/6> is prepared. Uses: Curing agents for isocyanate prepolymers, preparing polyurethane rubbers and making varnishes. |
