Azomethine dyes - of the benzimidazole-indole series for colouring thermoplastics and polyacrylonitrile, fibres. The dyes are of formula (in which R1 is H, methyl or ethyl, R2 is methyl or ethyl, R3 is H, methyl, beta-cyanethyl, or a 2-propionic acid or acid amide group. - X- is an inorganic or organic anion, D is a cyano, carbonamide or carbon ester groups and n is 0 or 1. - The benzene rings, A,B and C may contain further methyl or methoxy gps). - D is pref. a cyano group. - The condensation products of benzimidazole derivs. with 3-nitroso-2 phenyl indole derivs. (n=0) are suitable for incorporation in thermoplastics e.g. polystyrene and PVC, while the dye salts (n = 1) have good affinity and outstanding fastness on polyacrylonitrile fibres.
