A self-sealing hopper for charging shaft furnaces operating at sub-atmospheric pressures comprises a gas-tight casing 32 within which a pair of segment plates 12, 14 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 20. The lower ends of said plates 12, 14 are connected by a part-cylindrical sector gate plate 22 which controls the flow of material from the lower portion of a hopper 24, also connected to the plates 12, 14 by means of side rib plates 28, 30 is a part-cylindrical sector seal plate 26 which is loosely attached to plates 12, 14, to permit slight radial movement thereof and thereby seal under its own weight against sealing bars 34, 36 around the upper periphery of a conduit 38 and so isolate the hopper from the furnace. To maintain the sealing bars 34, 36 free from charging material the crosssectional area of the hopper exit is less than the cross-sectional area of a conduit 38 connecting the hopper to the furnace. Around the upper edge of said conduit 38 are four adjustable and replaceable wear bars 31, 33, 35, 37. Drive means for the shaft 20 may be hydraulic, pneumatic or electric as shown. Two or three hoppers may be mounted one above the other at the top of the furnace to form an air lock system to prevent variations in the operating conditions of the furnace. With this construction, gas may be removed from the lowermost hopper by an offtake from the housing 32. |
