摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject device which can enlarge an operation margin, enhance matrix drivability and exhibit safe and high displaying reliability, by using a pyrimidine-based compound as a constituent for a chiral nematic liquid crystal. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is obtained by using (C) a chiral nematic liquid crystal 10 containing as a constituent at least one compound selected from pyrimidine compounds, such as a pyrimidine compound of the formula [R1 is CnH2n+1; R2 is CN, OCmH2m+1, F or the like; (n), (m) are each an integer of >=1], so that the compound has a twisted structure in an initial state and exhibits two semi-stable states different from the initial state, when applying an electric voltage for causing Frederick's transition in the initial state and further forming a difference between the applied electric voltages, between (A) a scanning electrode member 4 which comprises a scanning electrode pattern having many scanning electrodes 2 and an orientation film 3, sequentially formed on a transparent substrate 1 and (B) a signal electrode member 5 which comprises a signal electrode pattern comprising many signal electrodes 7 and an orientation film 8, sequentially formed on a transparent substrate 6.
