PURPOSE:To provide a process for the production of ethers by using a phase- transfer catalyst consisting of a polyether polymer having oligo-oxyethylene group on the side chain. CONSTITUTION:An ether is produced from phenol, benzyl bromide and an alkali by using a phase-transfer catalyst consisting of a poly(oligo-ethylene glycol glycidyl methyl ether) having a reduced viscosity of 0.09 measured at 45 deg.C as 0.1% benzene solution and containing 8.5 oxyethylene groups on the side chain. The polymeric phase transfer catalyst of the present invention has high catalytic activity and gives the objective compound in high yield. |
