[Also in Division B8] An opening tab, e.g. of aluminium, is fastened to a can wall by means of rivets R at positions F extruded from the wall material and extending up through apertures formed in connected sections 36, 37 respectively of the tab. The right-hand rivet, as viewed in Fig. 9, is formed within a removable portion of the can wall defined by a pre-scored line 21, to provide a pouring opening in the completed can (see Division B8); the rivet R may be torn out to form a vent opening. The tab is attached to a flat surface of the can. Extrusion.-To form one of the rivets the can wall 12 is held between pressure plates 42, 43, Fig. 15. A mandrel 44 is moved to a position adjacent an opening 46 in the plate 42. A punch 45 engages the wall 12 to impress a dimple in the underside of the wall and thereby extrude material past the mandrel to form a rivet R in the opening 46. The rivet is subsequently headed by conventional means to hold the tab. |
