An inductive circuit component, e.g. a transformer, inductor, magnetic switching element or storage element, comprises one or more windings encased by one or more layers of a metallic magnetic material forming a magnetic circuit linking the windings, there being a gap in the layer or layers so as to render it or them electrically discontinuous in the winding direction. As shown, the primary and secondary windings 1, 2 of a transformer are covered with an insulating layer 3, and enclosed in metallic magnetic layers 4, 5, 6 separated by insulation 4a, 5a, an air gap U1 being provided to reduce eddy currents. An inductor (Fig. 2, not shown) comprises spiral windings (8, 9) photo-etched out of a copper layer applied to an insulating plastics foil (7), the windings being on opposite surfaces of the foil and with the same winding sense about a window (10) in the foil. Applied over the windings is an insulating layer, followed by a magnetic layer provided with an air gap (U2). The windings may be connected in series. Several such flat inductors may be stacked together with a magnetic layer embracing them all round the outside. Another application of the invention is described (Figs. 4-6, not shown). The substrate can be ceramic with screen-printed and fired-on conductors. The magnetic layers may be applied galvanically, electrochemically, electrolytically or electrolessly, several methods being described. The insulating layers may be applied by lacquering, e.g. electrophoretic lacquering, or these layers may be derived from copper, deposited electrolessly and subsequently converted to its oxide by wet chemical processes, or an insulating glaze can be used. The thickness of the magnetic layers applied is matched to the frequency range and particular application of the component, examples being described. The material of the magnetic layers may be iron-nickel alloy or highly permeable alloys of the permalloy type, and the method and conditions of deposition will depend on the desired characteristics of the layers. The inductance can be measured continuously during manufacture, and deposition of magnetic material halted when a desired value is reached. A control magnetic field may be produced during manufacture by passage of current through the component.
