A flame-retardant composition for thermoplastic polymers comprises the combination of the following chlorine containing compounds wherein R and R1 represent, when taken together, an oxygen atom, or, individually, a hydroxyl radical, an alkoxy radical or 1-8 carbon atoms or a haloalkoxy radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, with: (A) a phosphinic acid having the formula wherein R2 represents an alkyl radical of 1-6 carbon atoms, a cyano-, hydroxy- or carboxysubstituted alkyl radical of 1-5 carbon atoms, an aryl radical of 6-10 carbon atoms or an α-hydroxybenzyl radical, and R3 is hydrogen or R2; (B) a trisubstituted phosphine having the formula wherein R4, R5 and R6 represent alkyl radicals of 1-6 carbon atoms, cyano- or hydroxysubstituted alkyl radicals of 1-6 carbon atoms (no more than one alkyl substituent or cyano- or hydroxy-substituted alkyl substituent being present in the phosphine if the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group is less than six), or aryl radicals of 6-10 carbon atoms; or (C) a phosphine oxide having the formula wherein R7, R8 and R9 represent cyano-alkyl radicals of 1-4 carbon atoms, carbamoylethyl radicals, N or N,N1 - alkyl - substituted carbamoylethyl radicals or aryl radicals of 6-10 carbon atoms. The term "aryl radical" includes lower alkyl and halogen ring-substituted phenyl compounds. Each of the two components of the combination is incorporated into the polymeric material in concentrations ranging from 1.0% to 20% by weight, with preferred ratios for the two components of from 3: 1 to 1: 3. They may be added to the polymer as such or in combination, by blending, milling, or extrusion, or by moulding the components and polymer simultaneously. Alternatively, they may be added during the monomer polymerization. Plasticizers, dyes, pigments, heat and light stabilizers, antioxidants, antistatic agents and photochromic materials may be included in the flame-retarded polymer compositions. Many polymeric materials are mentioned, of which the following feature in the examples: polypropylene, polystyrene, butadiene-styrene copolymer, ABS type resin, poly (methylmethacrylate), and nylon (adipic acid-hexamethylenediamine reaction product).
