PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a luminescent material emitting high intensity and up-conversion fluorescence in the visible region when excited by infrared rays, especially the luminescent material emitting single light either one of red, green or blue. SOLUTION: The luminescent material emits light in the visible region with up-conversion when excited by infrared rays. In the material, glass powder is held in a matrix having a refractive index lower than that of the glass. The glass contains a rare earth element-containing halide crystal in a dispersed state and is a luminescent glass in which the crystal emits the up-conversion fluorescent light in the visible region when excited by the infrared rays.
