PURPOSE:To produce 2-cyano-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine useful as an intermediate for herbicide in high yield. CONSTITUTION:4,6-Dimethoxy-2-methanesulfonylpyrimidine is reacted with a metal cyanide in an organic solvent separable from wafer, such as an aromatic hydrocarbon, a halogenated hydrocarbon or an aromatic nitro compound in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (e.g. ammonium salt, phosphonium salt or crown ether) at 0-100 deg.C, preferably 0-70 deg.C to form 2-cyano-4,6- dimethoxypyrimidine. Since the organic solvent separable from water is used, an expensive highly water-soluble solvent such as aprotic polar solvent is not required, post-treatment after the reaction is simplified, loss of the solvent used is reduced, handling of the solvent is ready and there is no problem such as increase in load of treatment caused by admixture of the solvent. |
