[Also in Divisions C3, C6 and C7] Coated shaped articles are made by painting articles made from compositions comprising (1) a substantially crystalline polymer of a C 2-8 olefin and (2) 1 to 55 weight per cent of a compatible thermoplastic terpene-phenolic resin. Alternatively the articles may be primed with a carboxylated polybutadiene or maleated atactic polypropylene prime, vacuum metallised with aluminium, copper or silver, and overcoated with a thermosetting acrylic lacquer. Painting may be effected by brushing or spraying. The olefine polymer may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 3- methylbutene-1 or 4-methylpentene-1, or a copolymer thereof with a minor proportion of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl acetate. The terpene-phenolic resin may be derived from pinenes, dipentene, limonene, terpinene or turpentine and phenol, cresols, t-butyl phenols, p-phenylphenol, resorcinol or pyrocatechol. The compositions may also contain non-ionic surfactants, stabilisers, plasticisers, pigments and fillers, e.g. calcium and lead carbonates, barium and calcium sulphates, calcium, magnesium and aluminium silicates, mica, talc, bentonite, clay, alumina, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, diatomaceous earth, wood flour, glass fibres and asbestos. Examples describe the coating of articles made from compositions comprising terpene-phenolic resins, dilauryl thiodipropionate, 2, 6-di-t-butyl- 4-methylphenol and calcium stearate together with (8 and 10) polypropylene, talc and dibutylphthalate, (9) propylene/ethylene terminal block copolymer and dibutyl phthalate, (11) polypropylene, asbestos and hydrated calcium silicate and (12) propylene/ethylene terminal block copolymer and asbestos with (8-10) vinyl toluene linseed oil modified alkyd resin paints and (11 and 12) vinyl toluene soya oil modified alkyd resin paints which are applied by (8-11) brushing and (12) spraying.</p> |
