A discharge lamp L, particularly a h.p.m.v. lamp is fed through a series resistor Z, from an A.C. fed bridge rectifier D1-D4 having electrolytic capacitors C1, C2 across two arms. On the leading part of a half-cycle with terminal S1 positive current is fed through diode D1 and capacitor C2. Over the middle part of the halfcycle, current flows through diodes D1 and D4, and on the trailing part of the cycle, current flows not from the supply but from the discharge of capacitor C1, charged from a previous cycle, through diode D4. The components may be mounted in a lamp holder base (Fig. 3, not shown) of dimensions suitable for fixing to an electric conduit box. Constructional details of a lamp incorporating a divided series filament are also given, one part of the filament being shunted by a thermal switch after starting. The resistor Z may have a value of less than one-third of the equivalent resistance of the lamp and may be a tungsten filament incorporated in or separate from the lamp. |
