The automatic tensioning and damping element for continuous-chain drives which are elastically deformable between an empty and a loaded stringer, consists of a ring chain which is deformed in shape between a concentric circle and an elliptical Cassini curve. The ring's diameter is larger than the diameter of the smallest chain-wheel on the chain-drive. Between one inversion centre (2) and the inside of the ring (1) is a store of lubricant (3) either consisting of open-pored foam (3.1) or peripheral grooves or open cells. ADVANTAGE - The tensioning and damping element discharges lubricant to its toothed profile at a constant rate in proportion to a set threshold value for its temperature and rotational speed.
