A storage installation, e.g. a garage, comprises a multi-storey building 1, Fig. 1, having storage sites 12, Fig. 2 (not shown), distributed helically around the centre of the building, and a lifting means comprising a frame 7 arranged for vertical movement by rotational movement along a helical track 5, and having a platform 8 thereon driven by motors 10, Fig. 8 (not shown), so as to rotate the platform in a direction opposite to the above said rotational movement of the frame 7. The latter is supported on rollers 6 driven, by motors 11 and the platform 8 is supported on the frame 7 by rollers 9. The rotational speed of the platform 8 may be the same as that of the frame 7. The building has entry and exit chambers 13, 14, the entry 13 having means for centring a vehicle comprising spring-loaded tapering cheeks 15- 18, Fig. 3 (not shown). The platform 8 has a wheeled carriage 19 thereon, Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown), provided with a gripper 20 which is movable vertically by a motor 21. The gripper has laterally extendable gripping arms 22, 23 for lifting the front wheels of the vehicle. A motor 29 drives the carriage 19, a motor 33 moves the arms 22, 23 laterally, and a motor 34 moves the gripper 20 longitudinally of the carriage 19. A second gripper 30 similar to the gripper 20 is provided at the opposite end of the carriage 19 from the latter, for alternative use. A second carriage 19 may be provided on the platform 8 and the carriages 19 may be aligned or arranged in parallel. In a second embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), the building is non-circular and has storage sites of different sizes. In a third embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), the building has centrally arranged storage sites surrounded by an annular lifting means 38. In a fourth embodiment, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), similar to that described with reference to Fig. 10 (not shown), the annular lifting means is replaced by segments 40, 41 42, which are movable on a common helical track 43. In a fifth embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown), an annular lifting means has two decks 46, 47. The installation may be operated automatically, key-operated switches being provided at the entry 13 to control the parking or retrieval of a vehicle. The building may be of prefabricated construction and the lifting means may be incorporated after one storey has been completed and used in the further erection of the building. The latter may be above or below ground level. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 991,691.
