Heading C2C. 2,3 - Dimethyl - 2,3 - bis - (4 - nitrophenyl)- butane is prepared by heating 4 - nitrocumene in a polar solvent in the presence of a basic compound and of an alcohol which is resistant to oxidation. The preferred basic compounds are metal hydroxides and alcoholates, e.g. the hydroxides, methylates and tertiary butylates of sodium and potassium; the preferred alcohols are C 4 -C 12 aliphatic tertiary alcohols, e.g. tertiary butyl alcohol; and the preferred polar solvents are dimethyl sulphoxide and hexamethyl phosphonic acid triamide. |
