1,047,890. Soldering. NU LINE INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 12, 1963 [Nov. 13, 1962], No. 44692/63. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H2] An electrical contact 34 is mounted in a glass panel 12 by means of an intermediate tube 11. As described, the contact has an annular groove 36 which is initially filled with solder 38 to the inner diameter of the tube 11, Fig. 5 (not shown). The tube 11, which may be an iron nickel alloy, is then sealed in the glass wall 12 in known manner, and the outside of the tube may be plated with gold or silver. A flux solution is then applied to the inside of the tube and to the outside of the solder on the contact and the contact is inserted into the tube from the left-hand end. The end portion 33 of the contact forms an interference fit with the end of the tube 11, and so forms an initial seal between the two parts. The whole assembly is then immersed in an oil or other non-oxidizing media which will provide an even heat to cause the solder 38 to flow into the spaces between the portion 34 of the contact and the tube 11, by capillary action. A crimped ring 20 on the tube 11 prevents the solder from flowing to the forward portion of the contact 34. |
