The process is concerned with the manufacture of loose-woven, porous, flat matting from crimped fibre. The material is extruded as a pack from heated thermoplastic polymeric material. The pack is formed from closely packed discrete fibre runs, which, under the action of their own weight, fall onto the surface of a liquid quench-bath, allowing striping contact with at least part of the outermost fibres in the pack. The pack is passed through the bath at a slower speed than the extrusion speed, so as to effect crimping and two-way binding of the fibres then forming an integral matting structure with flat surface configuration and increased bulk. A polycarbonate type resin, PVC etc. can be used. |
