A portable sabre saw comprises a blade driving member 43 mounted in a casing for rotation about a first axis 37 and driven by a motor 26, 27, a saw blade carrier 89, a carrier guide 90 mounted on the casing for pivotal motion about second axis 105 lying in a plane substantially perpendicular to the first axis, the guide having a guideway embracing and mounting the carrier for longitudinal reciprocation in a direction substantially perpendicular to the first and second axes, and motion transmitting means interconnecting the driving member and carrier whereby rotation of the driving member reciprocates the carrier relative to the guide, and means for adjusting the position of the motion transmitting means to selectively impart pivotal motion to the carrier guide and carrier about the second axis. The motor is mounted in a twopart casing 20 and is formed with a pinion 33 on its driving-shaft 29 engaging a gear 35 mounted on a shaft 37 in a gear casing 31a. The driving member in the form of a gear 43 is mounted on shaft 37 and engages a pair of gears 44, 47 provided with counterbalance weights 51, 53. A crank 60 mounted in gear 43 carries a bearing 63 in a crosshead 60a slidable in a guideway 87 secured to the blade carrier 89. The guide 90 for the carrier is mounted on the pivot 105, and the guideway 87 is inclined at an acute angle to a plane normal to the axis of shaft 37 so that as the gear 43 rotates to cause the pin 60 to reciprocate the blade carrier in the guide, inclination of the guideway 87 causes the carrier guide to rock about the pivot 105. The inclination of the guideway can be adjusted by rotational adjustment of bush 108 in the carrier, the bush having a square bore for receiving the blade carrier 89; the bearing 63 on the crank-pin 60 has a spherical external surface engaging a complemental surface in the crosshead to permit the adjustment of the inclination. The casing has a handle 23 housing a lamp 116 supplied with power from a dropping resistor, and a transparent member 121 conveys a light beam from the lamp to the sawing area. |
