Ion exchangers (I) with primary and/or secondary amino-groups are pre-swelled in diluted formic acid and then treated with concentrated formic acid and an aldehyde (II) or ketone at 0 to 150 degrees C. (I) may be a porous copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene that has been chloromethylated and aminated with polyamines. (II) may be formaldehyde.
