The target 1 of an X-ray tube is mounted for rotation upon a shaft 3 located by bearings 8 within a housing 5 forming part of the anode terminal 10. The housing carries a permanent magnet 11 of cylindrical form which coacts with a cylindrical ferromagnetic member 9 mounted within a skirt 2 of the rotating anode. The magnetic field across the gap 15 between these members serves to damp the coast rotation of the anode after the tube has been switched off. The magnet 11 may be magnetized axially between four pairs of poles of alternating sign. |
