Described herein is a composition and method of removing a coating painted on a surface. The method involves applying to the surface an acetone based composition containing an organosilicon compound, rubbing the acetone based composition into the surface and removing from the surface the painted coating and the acetone based composition. The composition is a mixture of 1 to 75 percent by weight of acetone; 1 to 10 percent by weight of water; and 1 to 20 percent by weight of a volatile silicone fluid. The volatile silicone fluid having a vapor pressure of less than 13.3 MPa (0.10 mm Hg).
