Various embodiments of the present invention relate to a device and method for providing a tethering service in an electronic device. A method for operating the electronic device includes the operations of: establishing a communication connection with a counterpart electronic device for the tethering service; transmitting and receiving data corresponding to the tethering service through the counterpart electronic device; and transmitting a tethering deactivation request signal to the counterpart electronic device in response to the occurrence of a tethering deactivation event. Other embodiments of the present invention are also possible.
