A photographic silver halide emulsion contains (1) at least one sensitising dye of the formula: - wherein m and p are 0 or 1, n is 1 or 2, R is alkyl or substituted alkyl, A is OH, alkoxy or -NR<SP>2</SP> R<SP>3</SP> (R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> each representing H, alkyl or substituted alkyl), R<SP>4</SP> - R<SP>8</SP> are H, alkyl or aryl, X is an anion and Z represents the non metallic atoms required to complete an heterocyclic nucleus containing 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring and (2) at least one polycarbocyclic aromatic compound which is not a sensitising dye but contains a sulpho group or water-soluble salt thereof as a substituent in an aromatic carbocyclic ring which is connected to or forms part of a poly carbocyclic aromatic group as a supersensitising combination. Typical sulpho compounds are those described in Specifications 893, 681 and 895, 930. |
