Fillers and reinforcing agents are incorporated in polymers by contacting hydroxyl-group containing fillers and reinforcing agents with thermoplastic polymers having labile atoms which provide sites for the formation of free radicals in the presence of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride under free radical generating conditions whereby the thermoplastic polymer is chemically bonded to and coated on the particles of filler or reinforcing agent, and admixing the coated particles with a thermoplastic polymer. The polymer may be an olefin polymer or copolymer, e.g. with vinyl acetate, an acrylic polymer, a styrene polymer, vinyl resin, conjugated diene polymer, polyalkylene oxide, polyester, polyalkylene imine, polyamide, sulphone resin, aldehyde resin, polyurethane, epoxy resin or silicone resin. The unsaturated acid may be maleic, fumaric, citraconic, itaconic, acrylic or methacrylic acid or maleic anhydride. The filler may be clay, sand, glass or metal. The free radicals may be generated by a peroxide, e.g. dicumyl, methyl ethyl ketone, benzoyl or di-t-butyl peroxides or 2,5 - dimethyl - 2,5 - di(t - butylperoxy)hexane. The polymer used to treat the filler may be the same as or different from that in which the filler is incorporated. In an example clay is mixed with polyethylene in the presence of dicumyl peroxide and maleic anhydride, and the product incorporated in further polyethylene and moulded into films. |
