[Also in Division B4] A surgical suturing device comprises a channel-sectioned body part 10 terminating in an upstanding anvil 26 shaped to bend metal staples from a magazine 42, a bar 33 sliding in the channel of the body part 10 and carrying in a head part 35 the magazine 42, and a driver member (Figure 2, not shown) sliding within a bore in the bar 33 and able to be actuated by a handle 67 to 'eject staples from the magazine towards the anvil 26, and is characterized in that the staple magazine 42 (see Figure 4, not shown) is provided with flanges and is fitted into a correspondingly shaped vertical groove in the head part 35. The magazine is removably secured to the device by a spring 81 and the sliding bar 33 is guided against the body part 10 by lugs 56 and also by lugs 57 which fit in grooves 31. A groove 28 on the end 24 of the body part engages with a groove in the head part 35 as a guide. The bar 33 and head part 35 are moved relative to the body part 10 to clamp tissue against the anvil 26 by rotating a nut 51 on a threaded extension of the bar. The actuating handle is provided with a spring 72 and with a locking device 74-77. The staple magazine illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 (not shown) and the magazine and anvil illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 (not shown) provide for alternative patterns of staples in a suture. In an embodiment illustrated in Figures 5 and 7 (not shown), the spring 81 may project through the head part 35 and the magazine to clamp tissue against the anvil. |
