摘要 <p>1319601 Tufting machine yarn feed DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP 13 May 1970 [13 May 1969] 23243/70 Heading D1G In a tufting machine in which yarn 40 is cyclically inserted as loops into a backing fabric (16) through reciprocable hollow needles (30) by compressed fluid, feed means for producing different loop heights in accordance with a pattern comprises central drive units 86 each including a plurality of concentric shafts 100, 114, 124 driven at different rates by transmission means 43 and selectively engageable by clutches 135, 146, 148 with drive shafts 140, of yarn feed modules arranged circumferentially about the central drive units. As shown, there are four modules around each shaft 140 and the concentric shafts of all the central drive units are driven at different rates. through chain and sprocket transmissions from different sized sprockets 62, 68, 74 on a common shaft. Gears 158, 162 and 182, which are rotatably mounted on each shaft 140 and mesh with gears 122, 112 and 132 respectively of the concentric shafts, selectively drive the shaft 140 through an over-running clutch 156 and magnetic clutches 148, 150 respectively. When either magnetic clutch is energised to rotate the shaft 140 at the corresponding rate the clutch 156 over-runs. Each shaft 140 rotates a pair of feed rolls 210, 212 which control the supply of yarn to one needle. The pairs of feed rolls in each vertical row are staggered (Fig. 2, not shown) to prevent interference with other yarns 40. Energisation of the clutches of each module may be controlled by a respective circuit including a photocell sensitive to the light passing through a belt (238) (Fig. 7, not shown) with transparent, opaque and partlytransparent portions or including a makebefore-break switch (302) with a double leaf switching element (326) controlled from a camshaft (286) (Fig. 8, not shown) or by a pattern chain (Fig. 12, not shown).</p>
