Novel 9,10-dietherified anthracene compounds represented by (1); a photopolymerizable composition containing any of the compounds; and a process for producing a 9,10-dietherified anthracene compound which comprises reducing an anthraquinone derivative with hydrazine or a derivative thereof and reacting the reduced anthraquinone derivative with an alkylating agent. The compounds are represented by formula (1) (wherein R1 to R8 each independently represents hydrogen, C1-12 alkyl, fluorine, bromine, cyano, phenyl, cyclohexyl, hydroxy, benzyl, cyclohexylmethyl, 1-naphthyl, 2-naphthyl, -O-R9, -CO-R9, or -S-R9, where R9 represents C1-8 alkyl, phenyl, benzyl, cyclohexylmethyl, 1-naphthyl, or 2-naphthyl; X represents C2-8 alkyl substituted by halogeno, phenyl, or naphthyl, C1-4 alkyl substituted by C1-4 alkoxy, etc.; and Z represents C1-8 alkyl, C1-8 acyl, allyl, glycidyl, phenyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, benzoyl, naphthyl, etc.).
