[Also in Division B1] An apparatus for producing polymers comprises a means for initiating a polymerization reaction and means for transferring a partially polymerized viscous mass to a finisher wherein said finisher comprises a vessel having an inlet and an outlet and a screw device within the vessel, the pitch between flights of the screw decreasing along the axis of the screw. The variation in pitch between successive flights is preferably according to the equation p x d= constant, where p is the pitch between adjacent flights and d is the density of the reaction mass between adjacent flights; thus enabling a constant level of reaction mass to be maintained between the inlet and outlet. A partially polymerized mass is fed through 21 to screw pump 44 of finisher 23 driven by motor 25. A heating medium e.g. Dowthom (RTM) or steam, is used in jacket 36 and the gaseous by products of the polymerization let out of the finisher. A pump 42 is provided for discharging the polymerized mass through 24. |
