PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of lead wires to be located inside a cylinder to an irreducible minimum and to save the time and labor required for scanning. SOLUTION: In the water gauge provided with a plurality of water level sensors around the same peripheral part of the cylinder buried under the ground at suitable intervals in the axial direction of the cylinder, the same number of the water level sensors are grouped into blocks corresponding to a plurality of positions in the axial direction of the cylinder, the common terminals of water level sensors in each of blocks are commonly connected, and the output terminals of the water level sensors to which the same number is imparted in each block are commonly connected. A scanning device 2 scans the output of each level sensor for each block by switching the output of the sensor by a switching command. Further, a personal computer 11 receiving data obtained by this scanning device 2 and judging the presence/absence of penetrating water and the position thereof, is provided.
