The reader (50) has a main magnetic reading head (32) providing a signal (S1) representing a variation of magnetic flux due to passing of characters and a magnetic disturbance field. An additional magnetic reading head (52) provides a signal (S2) representing a variation of magnetic flux due to the magnetic disturbance field. A filtering module (54) provides a signal (S3) from the two signals (S1, S2), Where the signal (S3) represents the variation of the magnetic flux due to passing of the characters. A processing module (16) determines the characters read from the signal (S3). An independent claim is also included for a method for reading a magnetic ink character printed on a support.
