[Also in Division G6] In irradiating a material, the sample 1 is placed in a container or capsule having double walls 2, 3 separated by a gas filled space 4 acting as a thermal barrier, and to control the width of the space, there is attached to one of the walls, e.g. 2, a layer of metal strip 5 or wire (Fig. 2, not shown) of known thickness to produce a gap having the desired dimensions. As shown the strip or wire is preferably secured to the outer skin of the inner capsule and is wound around the capsule. The strip or wire may be of constant thickness, but if desired a plurality of strips or wire of different thickness may be used (Fig. 3, not shown) so as to produce a space of varying thickness and give a heat flow path through the space of varying configuration. If desired, the variation in width of the space may be periodic. The desired width of the space may be obtained by using two or more layers of strip or wire on all or part of the skin.
