PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element of simple member constitution which can be driven at a low voltage and has high display contrast, the display element having fully high white display reflection factor and less electrode staining caused by repeated driving. SOLUTION: The display element has an electrolyte containing silver or a compound, containing silver in a chemical structure and a porous white scattering layer between counter electrodes, and also drives the counter electrodes to dissolve and deposit silver. At least one of the counter electrodes is a transparent electrode, the porous white scattering layer is provided on the transparent electrode and contains at least particulates, and the particle size distribution of the particulates has at least two maximum values.
