1,123,120. Feeding cigarettes to packaging machines. MASCHINEN FABRIK FR. NIEPMANN & CO. 26 Oct., 1966 [28 Oct., 1965; 23 Aug., 1966], No. 48037/66. Headings B8C and B8S. While a fresh delivery container 2 is being inserted above a cigarette hopper 1 in a packaging machine, the level of cigarettes in the hopper is maintained by moving the walls 1a, 1b inwardly. This obviates any appreciable fall by the bottom cigarettes of the new batch. The top of the hopper is closed during this operation by a sliding member 3. The walls of the hopper may pivot about their lower ends, as illustrated, or the upper ends of the walls (Fig. 3, not shown) may pivot inwardly about their upper edges. The walls may be biased inwardly by springs 8 and retracted by rams 9. A light-barrier 5, 6 automatically initiates replacement of the delivery container 2 when the level of cigarettes in the hopper starts to fall. |
