Ergotamine tartrate - by adsorption of ergot alkaloids on alumina (iv) and elution with benzene/chloroform/methanol

Prepn. of ergotamine tartrate adsorbing, total ergot alkaloids on alumina (4th degree of activity) in a ratio of 10:1 - 20:1 with respect to the total alkaloids, the total depth of the bed of alumina being is not >100 mm and eluting ergotamine with benzene/CHCl3/methanol and then converting it into the tartate. Product has well-known activities, e.g. as a music contractant in obstetrics. Pref. eluants contain benzene/CHCl3/methanol in the ratio 40/20/1.
