Aminoalkyl esters of adamantane-1,3-dicarboxylic and - diacetic acids - with antimicrobial and antiviral activity

Cpds. of formula (I): (where n is 0 or 1; X is O or S; Alk is 2-6C alkylene separating X and N by >=2C atoms; R and R1 are 1-6C alkyl or NRR1 is 1-pyrrolidinyl, piperidino, morpholino or 4-methyl-1-piperazinyl), and their acid addn. salts and quaternary ammonium salts with alkyl halides, have antibiotic activity, e.g. against fungi and algae, and antiviral activity. They may be prepd. by reacting the corresp. adamantane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid halide (II) with HX-Alk-NRR1; reacting the dicarboxylic acid with Hal-Alk-NRR1 (Hal = Cl or Br) in an alcohol, pref. 2-propanol; or reacting (II) with HO-Alk-Cl and then with HNRR1.
