In a handling device for transporting heavy loads, two hydraulic drives are used. Each of the hydraulic drives is driven by a control device (11) and (12). To minimise the hydraulic circuit complexity, the first drive (1) is a unit comprising cylinder (3) and step piston (4). The small cylinder space (6) is pressurised at constant pressure. The pressure in the large cylinder space (7) is controlled by the first control device (11). The second drive is connected to the small cylinder space (6) of the first drive via the second control device and is connected, on the outflow side, to the large cylinder space (7) of the first drive. <IMAGE>
