The method involves detecting actual values of parameters influencing the functional efficiency of the turbocharger, including main parameters determining whether there is a fault and auxiliary parameters describing a component of the turbocharger for identifying component faults. In a first step for fault identification a main parameter determining the motor air supply is measured; in a second step at least one auxiliary parameter for fault identification is measured and a fault signal is generated if the actual and desired auxiliary value difference is excessive.
