A heat exchanger grate, e.g. for cooling hot slag or cement clinker, comprises alternate and overlapping fixed and movable grates 17 mounted on support frames 18, and each support frame has no portion which contacts a grate at a point forwardly of substantially the midportion of the grate. Each grate has a reinforcing flange 20 depending from each side with a downwardly-protruding extension 21 having a hook-like engaging portion 28<SP>1</SP> which interlocks with an aperture (not shown) in the wall of the support. Bolts 19 secure the grates to the supports. Cooling air passes upwardly from a lower plenum chamber through apertures in each grate to the material to be cooled. |
