<p>The appts. is esp. for uses with deeply coloured solns. An inverted 'U' tube which is adjustable in height is used for drawing off liquid after the sediment has setled in a settling tank. The bottom of the tube is surrounded by a cup with a cone valve in the bottom. The cup bears a light shining into a fibre optics light guide. When settling has taken place, the cone valve is closed and the cup is lowered unti lthe light ceases to shine through the light guide indicating that the cup is now resting in the sediment. The supernatant liquid is then drawn off. After the decanting operation is complete and the sediment is removed the appts. is flushed out. At this point the cone valve is opened to allow any sediment in the cup to fall out.</p> |
