1348026 Graft polymers based on methyl and allyl methacrylate copolymers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 April 1971 [28 Jan 1970] 20584/71 Heading C3G A graft copolymer having (A) a backbone which is a copolymer formed from (a) methyl methacrylate and, optionally, one or more of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, methacrylamide, methacrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, styreneα-methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, and 3-(2-methacryloxyethyl)-2,2-spirocyclohexyloxazolidine, the optional monomer(s), if present, constituting up to 20% by weight of the total (a) monomers, and (b) allyl methacrylate and, optionally, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, tart-butylaminoethyl methacrylate, aminoethylvinyl ether, or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, the total amount of (b) monomers constituting 0À2 to 15% by weight of the backbone (A) and the optional (b) monomers, if present, constituting 0À2 to 5% by weight of the backbone (A); and (B) at least one polymeric graft segment, a major proportion by wt. of which is formed from 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, 2-ethyl hexyl methacrylate, and lauryl methacrylate, the polymeric graft segment(s) constituting a total of 5 to 80% by weight of the total graft copolymer, and being free of units derived from the above (b) monomers. In examples (1 and 2) methyl methacrylate, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and allyl methacrylate were polymerized in a mixture of butyl and ethyl acetate with azobisisobutyronitrile, then 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, azobisisobutyronitrile, an aliphatic hydrocarbon, t-butyl peroxypivalate and methyl methacrylate were added to produce a dispersion of a graft copolymer, butyl acrylate being also present in the grafted segment in Example 2. A lacquer was produced in Example 3 from the above graft copolymer dispersion by blending it with naphtha, xylene, TiO 2 and bis(methyl cyclohexyl) phthalate. |
