A rotor (2) is comprised of a multiplicity of discs (3) arranged side by side with a spacing. The axis of the rotor (2) is situated in a horizontal direction above the water line of the waste water (6). A plurality of radially longitudinally curved ridges (4) at a distance from each other is arranged between each of the discs (3). The ridges (4) form waste water (effluent) channels (5) between themselves, into which channels, on rotation of the rotor (2), the waste water (6) enters at the rotor periphery and flows out again near the rotor axis. The rotor (2) is set in rotation by an electric motor, as a result of which the surfaces of the discs (3) and ridges (4) are alternately impinged first by the waste water (6) then by air. As a result, the biological film grows which takes its nutrients from the waste water (6) and as a result purifies the waste water. From time to time the biological film is discharged in flakes by more rapid rotation of the rotor, so that the surfaces become free for new growth. <IMAGE>
