PURPOSE: To produce phenylphenol in a high yield from a relatively inexpensive raw material, that is, monoisopropylbiphenyl. CONSTITUTION: A raw material mixture containing monoisopropylbiphenyl peroxide (HP) and a carbinol compound (CA) is oxidatively decomposed with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The raw material containing the HP is produced by oxidizing the monoisopropylbiphenyl with molecular oxygen in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt. The phenylphenol is purified by extracting the acid decomposition product of the HP with an alkaline aqueous solution, decomposing the alkali salt with an acid, extracting the phenylphenol from the decomposition product, and subsequently crystallizing the extracted phenylphenol with an aliphatic hydrocarbon or distilling the extracted phenylphenol. |
