PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce arithmetic amounts required for a processing for each picture element for realizing a high speed processing at the time of Hough transformation used for the extraction of the characteristics of graphic recognition. SOLUTION: Hough transformation is operated by a Hough curve calculating means 2 by limiting the arithmetic range of Hough transformation to a specific one starting from a specific operation starting angle calculated by an operation starting angle deciding means 1 among the arithmetic range 0-πof the Hough transformation. The other range is calculated by using conversion which can be realized by an operation with smaller arithmetic amounts than those at the time of the Hough transformation for the arithmetic results of the Hough- transformed range by an arithmetic result converting means 3 and an arithmetic angle converting means 4. Thus, the arithmetic amounts required for a processing for one picture element can be reduced.
